CRC to discuss dock variance, setbacksThursday, November 29, 2007
Wrightsville Beach planning director Tony Wilson will attend a meeting of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) on Nov. 29-30 in Greenville to represent the town and to stay up-to-date on several issues that could affect the town. The CRC is expected to rule on a variance related to the B&D pier issue, an ongoing case that stems from a property owner’s desire to put in a pier at 502 North Channel Drive. The property owner sought a variance from the CRC because it would be impossible to construct a pier, since it would encroach into the town’s riparian corridor and would be too close to a pier on an adjoining property. The CRC originally granted the variance, but the town and a neighboring property owner have appealed that decision. Wilson said the town will be represented by attorney William Raney Jr. in regards to the case. “B&D has been trying to put in a pier or dock — they have a lot on the water — and because it can’t meet some of our setback requirements, and CAMA’s setbacks, and the adjoining property owners will not sign off on it, there have been some legal battles going on,” he said. A pier on the property, Wilson said, could prevent the town from later using the adjoining 15-foot right-of-way for public access of some kind, such as a kayak launch. The CRC is also expected to discuss oceanfront setbacks. A change in the setbacks, said town manager Bob Simpson, could affect homeowners on Wrightsville Beach in the event that they had to rebuild their homes. “If the coastline changes markedly, and if they change the rules, it would vastly limit how close the structures could be built back toward the water,” he said. “It could be devastating to the beach communities. It’s a ruling that would impact all the beach communities, and that’s why we’re sending somebody to the public hearing.” Wilson said he will attend the meeting on Thursday and part of Friday to provide any input needed from the town of Wrightsville Beach and to bring back what he learns. |
