Wilmington area Realtors and homeowners received a belated Christmas present with the announcement that home sales made huge gains in November 2009.

The North Carolina Association of Realtors reported that home sales in the Wilmington region spiked 83 percent, leaping from 213 in November 2008, to 389 for the same period this year.

But, while the number of homes sales made huge gains, the average price of each home dipped by 11 percent. Prices slid from $252,311 in November 2008, to $223,697 in 2009.

Still, Wilmington outpaced the rest of the state and area Realtors and homeowners will likely point to the rise in home sales as a positive sign as the economy moves into a fresh year.

Home sales across North Carolina rose by an average 51 percent with the price of homes, however, only ticked an average 1 percent decrease—compared to the 11 percent drop in Wilmington. Home sales in the Washington/Beaufort area made the furthest gains, jumping a whopping 111 percent in November over the same time last year.
