New Hanover County Sheriff Edward McMahon announced on July 6 that Operation Firecracker, a campaign aimed at stopping drunk drivers during the days surrounding the Independence Day Holiday, resulted in the issuance of 145 violations, said sheriff's office spokesman Deputy C.G. Smith.

Smith said a dozen checkpoints were set up throughout the county. Those checkpoints resulted in 11 DWIs, three drug and more than 30 speeding violations.

The sheriff's office also caught 14 people who were allegedly driving with their licenses revoked, cited 20 people for seat belt violations and two for child passenger safety violations.

The operation, which was conducted from June 29 to July 5, was handled by the Sheriff's Alcohol Field Enforcement Unit.
