On Friday, May 16, Wrightsville Beach Elementary School gave parents, teachers and students a chance to kick back, relax and enjoy the summertime weather with food and music at its second Spring Fling Celebration in hopes of ending the year with camaraderie.
The event, which was originally held last fall, welcomed a huge turnout and provided an opportunity for members of the community to enjoy the beach school.
“It is just a chance to get together as a community,” said Wrightsville Beach Elementary School principal Pansy Rumley. “We have a wonderful school and wonderful parents, teachers and students.”

The black top on the school’s playground was decorated with children in an array of rainbow colored T-shirts — some jump-roping, others bouncing excitedly on pogo sticks — and yet, still, a sea of what seemed like 100 children of all ages, shapes and sizes, were engaged in a professional-looking game of kickball.
Parents were able to set up lawn chairs around the blacktop and have some adult conversations with other parents, community members and school staff.
“It is nice for the parents to visit with one another and get to know the teachers better,” said Rumley.
During the event, there was also a “Share your Talent” segment –– a talent show that gave students a chance to share their many gifts with their families and friends just a few weeks before summer.
“We do have very talented children,” she added. “It was more of a variety show format than a contest.”
The night gave way to food including pizza, roasted corn, fresh popcorn and homemade Italian ice, as well as live music provided by DJ Gerry White, who has provided the music for other WBS events, including the annual Fall Festival.
White played music to get the party started and carry it into the 8 p.m. hour and said that he had fun doing the events at the school.
“I do the Fall Festivals, too,” said White, “I have a lot of fun, and I love the kids.”
