Wrightsville Beach School (WBS) was overrun with witches, fairies and superheroes during the school’s annual Fall Festival on Oct. 19. The festival was kicked off with a costume parade, led by Princess Leia (also known as principal Pansy Rumley). She sat in a convertible driven by Darth Vader while students marched behind. After the parade, students in the WBS performance club entertained a crowd of hundreds with their performance of “Thriller.”

several activities to choose from, including a cakewalk, haunted house, creepy crawly slide, pin-the-wart-on-the-witch, Batty Bingo and more. A DJ kept partygoers energized with dance music, and some students competed in “Freeze Dance” on a black-and-white-checkered dance floor.
The cafeteria served as the silent auction room. It was crammed with parents eager to bid on autographed memorabilia, furniture, scooters and class projects. Each class created a work of art to be auctioned off, including bowls painted with the children’s names and whimsical artwork, a desk, table, quilt and a mosaic headboard and footboard.
Silent auction co-chair Stephanie Holt said the auction raised a grand total of $16,500. That is about $1,000 more than was raised at the 2006 Fall Festival silent auction.
“It went so well — it was laid out nicely, and it was fun. Everything went really great — I wouldn’t change a thing,” she said.
The hot-ticket item of the night was a fishing trip that went for $1,500.
Parents managed to drag their children away from the activities long enough to sit down and nosh on

Rumley said she was happy to see some of her old students at the festival.
“Not only are a lot of our current students here, but we even have some of our old students here — it’s nice that they still feel like they’re comfortable coming here,” she said.
Former WBS student Jessica Cummings said she was having a great time.
“I think it’s really fun and really awesome. I have come to almost every Fall Festival — the haunted house is really fun,” she said.
Jared Rosbrugh, 9, said he was having a good time. He said his favorite activity was the haunted house.
