Farmers’ market management change estimated to save thousands

The Wrightsville Beach Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee voted on Monday, Feb. 3, to use a part-time staffer to manage the Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market this year.



Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market manager Angela Cannon will not return for the upcoming season, but a change in management is estimated to save the town thousands.

The Wrightsville Beach Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee voted unanimously Monday, Feb. 3, to use a part-time staffer to help head the market instead of an outside contractor.

The recommendation will go before the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen for approval.

In 2013, market manager fees totaled $6,105, by far the largest market expense. The other expenses were $450 for administrative costs and $117 for banner, umbrella and signs.

With $6,605 in revenue from fees collected in 2013, the market came in at a loss of slightly more than $67. With a projected revenue increase to $7,510, a part-time staff replacement of $1,728 in lieu of manager fees and an additional $450 in administrative costs, the market would come out with an estimated profit of more than $4,600.

Parks and recreation program supervisor Katie Ryan previously went along with Cannon during site visits, and committee members offered to accompany Ryan during the coming year. Site visits are only necessary for new vendors.

“I would still just continue to do what I’ve done,” Ryan said. “… We’re capable of doing it in the office.”

Ryan said several market vendors have approached her about taking over Cannon’s position.

The rest of the 2014-15 budget, Ryan said, is similar to the 2013-14 budget, with no major changes.

Considerations will be made about whether to add CPR classes, which Ryan has discussed with the Wrightsville Beach Fire Department. Committee member Charlotte Murchison suggested adding -babysitter certification courses also.

“That would hit a different age group too,” Ryan said.

Ryan will bring the budget recommendations, including event stage maintenance costs, before the committee in March.
