Michael Lee, a Wilmington attorney with Lee Law Firm, PLLC has announced his intention to run for the North Carolina Senate's District 9 seat.
The seat is currently occupied by Republican Thom Goolsby. Lee is the only Republican who has announced his intention to run for the seat. Goolsby announced Jan. 10 he would not seek reelection to the state senate, citing family and work obligations.
A Jan. 15 press release stated Lee has received endorsements from current and former Republican state lawmakers including Goolsby, Rep. Ted Davis and former Rep. Danny McComas.
I am deeply moved and grateful for the many, many phone calls and messages of encouragement for me to seek this solemn responsibility delegated by the voters to represent our region.  I will campaign for this responsibility in the same way I would serve District 9, with tenacity, dedication and integrity, Lee stated in the press release.
This will be the third time Lee has sought the office. He won the GOP nomination in 2008 before losing to Democrat Julia Boseman by 3.4 percentage points. He ran again in 2010, but lost the Republican nomination to Goolsby by 20 percentage points.
No other Republicans have announced their intention to run for the seat. Elizabeth Redenbaugh, a former member of the New Hanover County Board of Education, announced Jan. 11 that she would run for the senate seat.
Candidates for the state general assembly have from Feb. 10 through Feb. 28 to officially file to run in the 2014 primaries.
