18 years as the Cape Fear region’s delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Mike McIntyre announced Jan. 8 he will retire after the completion of his current term.

A press release sent from McIntyre’s office Wednesday listed his accomplishments as including the establishment of veterans clinics, expansion of military bases and creation of a commission to promote jobs and fight poverty.

“Having answered the call entrusted through this partnership, I will be retiring from the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of this term,” the release stated. “My family and I are ready for a new chapter and excited about new opportunities to continue helping North Carolina.”

New Hanover County Board of Commissioners Chairman Woody White, who said he will be officially announcing his candidacy for North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District Jan. 13, said the Congressman’s announcement would not change the message of his campaign.

“We are running our campaign on a message that we believe people will want to hear, which is the government is spending too much and it’s simply time for a fresh, new voice,” White said. “It’s time for a member that can represent both coastal interests and agricultural issues to run.”

A statement from former state Sen. David Rouzer, also sent Jan. 8, reiterated his plan to again seek the office. Rouzer lost to McIntyre in 2012 by a margin of 0.2 percent.

“It is with great optimism that my supporters and I continue our mission to bring conservative leadership to Southeastern North Carolina,” Rouzer stated. “I will work hard to find long-term solutions to the significant challenges facing our coastal, business and farm communities as well as our veterans.”

County commissioner Jonathan Barfield, who has also announced his intent to run, did not immediately return phone calls for comment.
