Christopher Snow, 16, is congratulated by fellow divers after retrieving the cross believed to bring a special blessing on Jan. 10, 2009, during the ninth annual Epiphany Celebration at Wrightsville Beach Marina.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will hold its annual Cross Dive on the sound side of the Blockade Runner Beach Resort. During the event, clergy of the church will be joined by Metropolitan Alexios, the spiritual leader of the Southeastern Greek Orthodox community, in a service for the blessing of the waters. At the end of the service, young men and women from the church will dive into the water after a cross thrown by the priest. The youth who retrieves the cross from the water is said to be blessed for the whole year.
The event, which is open to the public, will start at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a picnic fellowship at Wrightsville Beach Park. For more information on this tradition and the event visit www.stnicholaswilmington.org/CrossDiveEvent.html
