Just a word

Psalm 106:44-47 “But He took note of their distress when He heard their cry; for their sake He remembered His covenant and out of His great love he relented. He caused them to be pitied by all who held them captive. Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to Your Holy Name and glory in Your praise.”

This psalm is a psalm of deliverance, of mercy and grace. The 38 verses that preceded these are a laundry list of almost every sin the Israelites had committed up to that point. It is a list of every reason God could possibly have not to help them.

And then notice these words: “For their sake He remembered His covenant and out of His great love He relented.” God had all sorts of reasons not to help the Israelites in the time of their distress, but He had an even greater reason to ignore those reasons: the covenant He’d made with them.

God is a God of His word. When He promises something, He delivers. When He makes a covenant, He keeps it, even if we don’t. His people were spread across the nations, and as they cried out to God, they knew He would hear them even scattered across the known world. Their praise of Him from the different nations would reach Him. All would be forgiven; their praise would be accepted.

There’s nothing we can do to make God forget His covenant. We could be scattered to any nation, our backs fully turned to God, and even then, should we turn around and offer praise or cry out to Him, He will hear it. It is in His nature. He will never forget us!

Let’s Pray: “God, I don’t have the best memory sometimes. I forget things; we all do. Thanks for remembering me. Thank You for turning Your ear toward me, Lord, so that when I call on You, You hear me. Thank You for Your great love that outweighs my stubbornness, my sin. I’m so grateful, Lord. Amen.”
