Enthusiasm for board sports in Wrightsville Beach has abounded for a long time, particularly among young people. As a new generation starts riding, it is the opinion of the Wrightsville Beach Foundation that awareness and safety should be encouraged. The WBF will host a free Skateboard Day for that purpose on Friday, May 17, from 4-7 p.m.  Jerry Allenís and Robertís Market have donated use of their parking lot and Eastern Skateboard Supply has donated a skateboard to be given away.

In a sport where non--conformity is part of the appeal, safety is less than glorified although the dangers are more than real. Most common in skateboarding are wrist and ankle injuries, followed by head injuries. While the event is free, donations will be accepted for the purpose of furthering the work of projects and amenities around the island. The WBF is hoping for about 40 skateboarders and their families to attend.
