U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre’s campaign
announced late Friday, Nov. 16, that he was re-elected to his 7th District
Congressional seat as counties finished the canvassing process that followed a
close general election race with North Carolina Sen. David Rouzer.
McIntyre led by 655 votes, his campaign said, with 168,697
total votes to Rouzer’s 168,042 votes in the 7th District, which covers all or
parts of 12 counties, including New Hanover County.
Election results were
still listed as unofficial on the North Carolina State Board of Elections’
website Friday evening.
“I’m honored that the
voters of eastern North Carolina have put their trust in me to represent them
in Washington. I thank them for their confidence and pledge to continue to put
their interests first,” McIntyre, who currently was serving his eighth term in
office, said in a prepared statement. “Our country faces many challenges and we
need less partisan rhetoric and more cooperation in Washington. I will continue
my work to lower the deficit, cut government spending and red tape so small
businesses can flourish and we can create more jobs.”
McIntyre, D-N.C., of
Robeson County, had led with about 500 votes late on the Nov. 6 general election
night.
It was not immediately clear if Rouzer, R-Johnston and Wayne,
would request a recount. A statement from his campaign was expected early next week,
spokeswoman Jessica Wood said in a Nov.
16 email.
