Michael George of Wilmington picks up cigarette butts and other trash from the beach on Saturday, Sept. 24 during the Keep America Beautiful Big Sweep at Johnnie Mercer’s Pier.

This Saturday, Sept. 29, the Keep America Beautiful North Carolina Big Sweep will be held at various locations around New Hanover County. In Wrightsville Beach there will be several check-in sites: the L-shaped lot at Public Beach Access No. 4, Johnnie Mercer’s Pier, Crystal Pier, Public Beach Access No. 43 at the south end and Wrightsville Beach Park. The sweep will take place from 8 a.m. to noon, and participants are encouraged to wear sunscreen, sturdy closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothes for getting dirty. Participants are also encouraged to bring a bucket or burlap sack for collecting litter.

The North Carolina Big Sweep began as a beach cleanup project in 1987 and is now an annual statewide event. Since its inception, more than 300,000 volunteers have retrieved more than 10 million pounds of debris from North Carolina’s waterways.
