Every few months the state-based nonprofit environmental advocacy organization, Environment North Carolina, completes reports on the state of North Carolina’s offshore wind energy potential. On Thursday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m., the organization will hold a press conference beside Johnnie Mercer’s Pier to present its most recent report.
David Rogers, Environment North Carolina’s field director, said North Carolina has the most potential for offshore wind energy on the East Coast and that the 297 GW of energy the turbines could consistently produce would be enough to power the entire state. Despite Governor Bev Perdue’s endorsement of offshore wind energy, Rogers said many North Carolina legislators have failed to support clean energy in favor of “energy sources of the past.”
In addition to Rogers, the Sierra Club’s Zachary Keith and Wrightsville Beach Mayor David Cignotti will also be speaking at this event, which is free and open to the public.
