People join hands at noon on June 25, 2011 for the Hands across the Sand event to protest offshore drilling and promote clean energy. The N.C. Coastal Federation has awarded Lumina News a Brown Pelican Award for its coverage of coastal issues such as this one.

Lumina News will be one of 16 individuals and organizations recognized this weekend by the North Carolina Coastal Federation during its 30th anniversary celebration in New Bern on Saturday, Aug. 4.

The weekly community newspaper will be the recipient of the NCCF’s 2012 Southeast Media Award of the Year for its reporting on efforts to protect and preserve North Carolina’s coast, stated Todd Miller, NCCF executive director in a letter dated June 29 to publisher/editor Pat Bradford.

The annual awards program, named after the once-endangered brown pelican was created by the federation to recognize exemplary achievements and actions in protecting and restoring coastal resources.

Lauren Kolodij, NCCF deputy director, explained that the nominations come from within the foundation.

"The people, the organizations, the agencies — the local governments they’ve worked with over the past year. Who has helped … make a difference in how the coast is today?"

Kolodij said that Lumina News has made a difference in how the Stop Titan movement has been covered and in the reporting of other coastal issues. Lumina News was nominated for the award by Tracy Skrabal, coastal scientist and office director of the NCCF’s southeast region.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of Media Production will receive a statewide Brown Pelican Award for its documentary, "Habitats Heroes and Hallelujah: Stories of Hope from the North Carolina Coast."

The town of Wrightsville Beach was recognized in 2010 with a Brown Pelican Award for its leadership in establishing a No Discharge Zone for all of New Hanover County.

Other 2012 award recipients will be announced on Friday, Aug. 3.
